42. Competition i entered

I entered a competition at RSPB (royal society for protection of birds). The main aim of this competition is to submit up to 4 images that represent nature. it could be a bird, plant, bug, animals or it could be a view which captures the beauty of wildlife.
The competition is to decide what is going to be in 2015 wildlife calendar. giving 12 winners but only the top 3 win prizes.
I entered this competition due to it being a subject which i am extremely interested in and also it gets my work out there for people too see. Even if i do not win, i have still had the opportunity to go through the process of the competition and gain more experience when entering the competition. It shows me the process which i took to get where i am.

My images i have chosen to enter in the competition with are the ones below... I have out these in due to them being different, unique and stand out when it comes to the scenery. They show of the scenery of wildlife and the changes in the world. It give you an idea of how wildlife is surviving in todays world.

When entering the competition i had to write a little information underneath my image and this is what i wrote for each of my images.

This image i have chosen, due to the composition and capturing a specific moment when the light appears from behind the tree, giving you an eye opener to the branches of life.

Craig Jones has always had a love for wildlife photography, his own representation of the world is unique and sees what he want to capture through his eye before his camera. His intention in his work is to bring people awareness of what beautiful wildlife is at our door step and all around us.
His camera is really just recording something that has occurred. his skill likes in the presentation and how it shows beauty, the mood, emotion and moment captured.

Who is Chris Weston...

Chris Weston work tells a story he classes himself not only as a photographer but a storyteller as well. His aim of his work is to amuse emote, inform, educate and entertain.

It allows me to see what others are producing and i sailed this photographer because his work is beautiful, bright and exciting to look at. Its unusual to see wild animals so close.

1)   How did you become a wildlife photographer?

A. It started as a hobby I then resigned from my full time job in IT sales and took up photography professionally.

2)   What do you look for when creating your images?

A. A good story.

3)   What equipment do you use?

A. A vast range of equipment. My main camera is a DSLR with lenses ranging from wide-angle to medium telephoto. I am currently experimenting with using a mirrorless camera system.

4)   Do you always use a tripod?

A. Not always but whenever it is feasible to do so, yes.

5)   What specific area of wildlife photography do you pay most attention in and why?

A. My speciality is endangered mammals.

6)   Would you suggest that wildlife photography is a good career to follow?

A. It’s the best job I’ve ever had.

7)   As an amateur photographer, how would you suggest I go about getting my work published?

A. Put a portfolio together of your VERY BEST work and show it to picture buyers, e.g. magazine editors, media agents, book publishers.

8) What advice would you give someone who is interested becoming a wildlife photographer 

A. Just do it … but remember, to make a living in wildlife photography you have to think of it as a business first. It’s not all glamour and travel to exotic locations. There’s a lot of hard work and you have to be an exceptional salesman, business development expert, finance guru and administrator.

I emailed the photographer James Silverthorne as one of my primary research photographers for my report. I emailed this particular photographer because i found his work to be fascinating, beautiful and eye capturing. He get the picture where you are close up to the animal or scenery and you feel like you are part of it. I find it amazing and lovely to look at. His work is inspiring. 

Questions i asked James about Wildlife photography and the answers he gave me....

1)   How did you become a wildlife photographer?

A- Always had a passion for the Outdoors and Wildlife, by chance was given a camera and that was it.

2)   What do you look for when creating your images?

A. I look for clean, simple images, I often shoot into the light. I try to be creative and put my own stamp on something.

3)   What equipment do you use?

A. I use Canon Equipment 5D mark 2 and 3 and various lenses up to 5oom.

4)   Do you always use a tripod?

A. No I don't always use a tripod , it depends what you are shooting.

5)   What specific area of wildlife photography do you pay most attention too and why?
  A. I focus on subjects close to home as they can be visited again and again.

 6)   Would you suggest that wildlife photography is a good career to follow?

A. Nope Wildlife Photography is not a good career, there is little to no money in it unless you run workshops or holidays.

7)   As an amateur photographer, how would you suggest I go about getting my work published?

A. Keep sending in work to magazines etc, avoid posting too much work on blogs/Facebook etc as it losses its impact as some will have seen it. Develop your own style and keep at it.

8)   What advice would you give someone who is interested becoming a wildlife photographer?

A. Follow you passion, have a back up plan or win the lottery.

Who's is Geoff Simpson..... 

Geoff Simpson lives near Northumbria which allows him to be never away from Nature which is great as a wildlife photographer. As a youngster he liked starfish, bull heads and elvers, this has carried on into his adult life.
Geoff is a generalist photographer who is happy photographing almost anything. He is specialise in landscapes and nature photography of the peak district national park, many of his images have become iconic, his photos have been copies thousand of time.

I emailed Geoff Simpson because i wanted him to be based in y report because i am fascinated by his work he has produced. Also because i have written the report on a photography career that i am really interested in and want to do for my future career, i though it would be good to get a view by another photographer in today's line of work and how they find it within the working industry.

1)   How did you become a wildlife photographer?

A- had taken lots of decent images prior to going full time

2)   What do you look for when creating your images?

A- light, evocative quality and most importantly uniqueness

3)   What equipment do you use?

A– canon throughout 1Dx, 5D Mkll and 7D-17mm TS-E lens through to 600mm prime lens

4)   Do you always use a tripod?

A- no not always I use the image-stabilising feature on lenses more so if I’m looking to create arty images

5)   What specific area of wildlife photography do you pay most attention in and why?

A- Wide angle the subject within the context of its ecosystem/environment

6)   Would you suggest that wildlife photography is a good career to follow?

A- No! If I did not have a luxury showroom gallery you simply cannot make enough to have a great standard of living.. you need to do workshops, tours etc to make money.

7)   As an amateur photographer, how would you suggest I go about getting my work published?

A- Today, its easy just as long as its free, that said it completely the wrong model. Gallery and tours is the way forward when one considers that Getty has decided to make 3.5 million FOC.

8) What advice would you give someone who is interested becoming a wildlife photographer?

A- don’t follow the crowd, it’s a road to financial failure and above all be yourself, be unique.

Questions for photographers - 

Thinking about emailing wildlife photographer was nerve wracking and i didn't know what to do or what to say. so i made up a list of questions what i was going to ask them. Thinking of the questions was difficult, i didn't know what to ask, how to make it sound ok, and how to make it sound like i have questions which are not only one word answers.

This book shows images of garden, plants, flowers and botanical garden. they are the very best images of competitions which have been going on since 2008.This book shows two different opinions, it shows the love of the beauty of plants and the opportunity to express their love for wider natural landscapes and its fragile nature. Its inspiring. This book shows the photographers talents.

Its a celebration of the past 5 years. it includes more than 250 images from professional and amateur photographers. It includes detail of equipment and technique, and inspiration behind the image.

I have put this book in because i bought it from the Birmingham's photography show and i found it to be beautiful, inspirational and exciting to look at. I feel in love and could resist buying it for my book collection.

This book is all about celebrating photographers of all nationalities in the UK. it highlights the Britsh natural history. This book shows of the british wildlife photography awards, a competition which celebrates the wildlife.
Photographers in the book shows a different view point and different approaches to photography, the book shows off the photograph with the photographers detail below the image, and their inspirations that inspired their work.
It also gives you notes of their technique, type of equipment and resources for anyone interested in improving their work.

This book i received for easter because i am inspired by wildlife, my life is the wildlife and its just incredible to see what others interpretation is. Its inspiring. I do love looking at all the image because they are all unique and inspirational in their own way.

This book helps you set out to take images of wildlife photography, it guides you when taking photos. This book consist of 100 of his photographs and detail on how every one of them was taken. It explains in detail and guides you through the process.

The pages i have picked are all to do with wildlife photographer, with the headline called 'wild heart'. i found these page t be beautifully pictures with exceptional informations ranging from depth knowledge, with patience, commitment and imaginations. It is a situation where they are following a photographer Graham Eaton..
in these pages from pages 40+ its follows another photographer called Darren Holloway when he travelled the world trying to find exciting and interesting creatures and trying to capture the exceptional images of them.

Looking in this journal i found that it was a great journal to read but i was mostly interested in where they pages 74-81.
I found these pages related to my topic that i am basing my final report on due to them being about wildlife. There a significant amount of photos in the article to do with elephants.
The article is about a photographer documenting the life of elephants in central Africa.

The article is basically telling you about a photographers experience when watching these magnificent animals throughout his camera lens. Taking and searching for images which show who the elephants are and how they live.

Some of the pictures are sad to look at for example page 76 where the elephants face has been destroyed. It makes it more realistic that these animals are being hunted for their tusks.

I find this article to be interesting to read and look at.

The pages which are written above are the ones that stood out when i was looking through the journal, they are both to do with wildlife photography.

Two different views on wildlife photography..

Pages 72-77 are about 'more than human', it is based on someone spending time with photographer Tim Flach and seeing whats behind the idea of his book 'more than human'. It more of an onsite into his world.

Pages 85-91 are about, another photographer Steve Bloom and about his wildlife photographs, it talks about how his photography is changing...

My question that i am basing my report on is...

What it takes to be a wildlife photographer.... 


I am basing my report on wildlife photographer because i have always enjoyed wildlife and for many years i have based my work on the outdoors, animals and scenery. I wanted to base my report on this because it give me a better view on other professional photographer who specialise in this area of photography.
I have always wanted to have something to do with wildlife and i would consider doing this for my further career in photography.

I emailed a few photographers and their response wasn't what i expected when i asked them about the career choice, 2 out of 3 of them said it wasn't a good career, but i do not mind because its something i am passionate about and it not always about money.. I understand you need money but this career for me is something that i am interested in.

It was interesting talking to the photographers because i felt like i understood the career choice bait more and it was interesting to see what equipment they use and how they go about to get the right images.

What is the Job 

The role of an assistant photographer is to do whatever is needed to make sure that the photo shoot runs perfectly.
It usually consist of prepaying sets, checking all the equipment works properly, setting up lights, and accessories, taking meter readings, transmitting files and transporting film or prints to and from labs.

In a studio, you will help with keeping the set clean and tidy and printing photographs as required.
Catalog and optimise digital files, scan film and assist with images manipulation and enhancement.
You will keep records of film stock, exposures, lighting set ups, also names and details of art directors, models, stylists, animal handlers and other contributors. you are expected to entertain clients during a shoot

On location, assessment of the site before arrival for shoot, check vehicle access, power and communication facilities. Organise transport, catering and accommodation, set up equipment.
Some photographer have several assistants known as first assistant, second assistant and so on...
First assistant has main contact with photographer ons set, second assistant is genera; administrations....

What is wildlife photography

Wildlife photography is  way of documenting the world and how it changes throughout time, not only recording the scenery but the habitat within it.
Although there are not places where you can help prevent animals being destroyed, photography is also another way to preserve the memory of the animals.

Wildlife photography is focused on taking images of wildlife and non domesticated animals, its important for its artistic value and scientific value. Wildlife photography is all natural, focusing on wild animals.

What is the Job.

Forensic Photography is a way of producing a record when it comes to accidents and crime scenes, this is so it is a permanent record for when in court. When taking the photograph they must remember to make sure they get two different angles of the scenery. for example, an overview of the scene as well as more accurate image and close up of the finding such as finger prints, tire marks, foot prints, bloom spatters, bullet holes and other unique evidence.
must be able to take accurate photographs of injuries sustained and the dead body.
Although you are just recording the situations, it can still be distressing. Forensic photographer are often hired by police or a forensic service.

Fashion Photography is a job which you not only photograph the garnets but you also are advertising the seasons and the range of clothes, the designer and brand. With fashion photography you get to use the studio and also go on location offering a wide range of different scenery. there work is eye capturing. Being a fashion photographer isn't as easy as you think it would be, you need to understand the clients brand, the various end use of images and that your able to work closely with there creative people. they must have sufficient experience and composure to operate under pressure.

Fashion photographer must have a knowledge of the latest brands and a history of fashion photography, art and fashion.
They have to have a foot in the door and keep up to date producing new things, so they don't get left behind in the industry and so people look at their work and don't pass on to the next photographer.

She started to create sculpture in 2004 after moving to London and being an undergraduate she was aquatinted with many artist, she was encouraged by their style she came more equated with sculptures.
