L5. 2 Competitions and Awards

Looking at photography competitions is just one way on getting your work out, although many people rely on these for advertising their work on for the winning of money/equipment. This is a huge role in their day to day lives. Not only is it a way of putting the photographers work out there but it is also a great way for the company to keep people involved in their work and websites. It is a business way, maybe its what a not known photographer needs to promote themselves as an artist.
A main reasoning for looking into photography competition is due to be advised for the module is to look and enter a competition but also it is a good way to see what is being produced in todays society and the competition that is out there.

Below are some competitions which are being held during the year 2014. They take place each year offering different competitions and brief so that they can see a wide range of different extraordinary and creative work from the photographers in todays world. 

Lens Culture Awards

'Visual Story Telling'

The Lens Culture Awards take place offering photographers old and new the opportunity to follow a brief and submit an image or a series of work
This years competitions are 'Documentary, Personal Stories, Photojournalism,  Fictional Narrative, and an open category.

'Most of all, we want to be surpassed and delighted; learn things we didn't know: understand situation from different points of view: see stories that sear themselves into our imaginations and become unforgettable. This competition gives you the opportunity to show off what you are interested in and lets you get your work into the public eye and others photographers presence. The competition and judges are open too different themes and approaches to photography.

Each year the competition is judged by a panel of 5 people, this year they are...
James Estrin, Magdalena Herrera, Dewi Lewis, Yumi Goto, and Jim Casper.

AOP Student/Open Awards

The AOP/Open Awards is a competition which is for everyone: ranging from Professional, student, amateur photographer, photographer who want to get their work out there. This competition to get your work in a gallery not only lets you enter your work but also lets you compete against other photographer who may have more experience or less experienced. it also lets you see what other photographers are producing and see what the market is looking for.

2014 competition it gives you a choice of submitting 'stills' or 'moving images', it goes into detail on the website of what is expected and the rules and regulations. Also other competitions that they hold.

Fujifilm student Awards

The Fujifilm website explains what is expected of you and how you can submit your work into the competition. Fujifilm 2014 brief is an open brief which allows the photographer too use their fresh new ideas to create something that is exciting, new and captures the detail.
The winner will be choose by a judging panel, looking for exciting new things that haven't been done before.
Fujifilm is all about using film and not digital, going back to the more of the photography root and the beginning unlike today world when it is all digital.
On the website it allows you too see what is expected off you when entering the competition.

National Portrait Gallery Photographic Portrait Prize

The national portrait prize is a competition which shows off contemporary photographers from around the worlds, brand new exciting work that they produce.
The work that is chosen are work which have not been seen before, its shows the traditional and the original use of photography.
The images that could be submitted range from many specialist areas such as  Editoria, advertising, fine art.

Exhibitr Student Photography Competition

'An Eye for a Shot'

This competition is for photographers who are don't just need to be professional or on a photography course, you can enter if you want to. It not only offers photographers the opportunity to show their work but also photographers who use photography as a hobbie.
You need to be in a full or part time education and over the age of 16.

RPS Awards

This is a link which takes you too the RPS Awards (Royal photographic society) website http://www.rps.org/awards

The RPS Awards are medals which are award annually which cover 15 categories ranging from photographers to photographic scientist, curators and educators. not only does this society awards the Progress medals but they also award the Honorary Fellowship of the society award.
This award is given to someone who has achieved stuff in their life time.
