PGCE
I have come to the conclusion that after graduation from
Cleveland College of Art and design I am going to go into teaching and become a
secondary school art teacher. But before I can do that there are a few
qualifications that I need to get.
You are required to have GCSE in English and Maths at C or
above but unfortunately I do not have this. I was diagnosed with dyslexia at
university and should have had help through school, but this will not stop me
from becoming a secondary school teacher.
What I have done to help me secure my GCSE is talked to
someone at Stockton Riverside College about sitting classes and then taking the
test. This will take place in September 2016.
Since I cannot go straight into my teacher training I am
going to volunteer at a Secondary School in the art department. I am currently
going to talk to someone at Our Lady and St Bede Secondary School as well as
other secondary schools. This will allow me to gain experience working in
schools and also give me the experience needed for the PGCE course.
To go about applying for a PGCE I have looked at the UCAS
Teacher Training website
Since I have already done an undergraduate degree I would
need to apply for a postgraduate course that will take me into teaching.
UCAS website hold information regarding what it takes to get
onto the course, how to become a teacher, as well as much other information.
You can get on this website by using the link https://www.ucas.com/ucas/teacher-training/getting-started/postgraduate-routes-teaching
This screen shot is basically just a section of the
information that is presented on the UCAS website.
There is two different ways that you could get into teaching
by, two directions.
The first direction is through a university or college.
·
Training programs help you to be recommended for
QTS and to achieve a PGCE
·
Get classroom experience – spend time teaching
and being trained in at least two schools (24 week programme)
·
Spend time at university or college, working
with a group of student and taught by staff too
The course usually runs from September to the June
The second option is Teaching in a school
·
Training support from teachers
·
Still include lecturers, tutorials, seminars
that cover same material as universities and colleges
·
All courses lead to QTS recommendation, and most
to PGCE qualification (make sure your course is a PGCE course)
·
First come first served
if you are interested in doing your PGCE I would recommend
that you look into the UCAS teacher training website because there are a lot
more options and information that you would need to consider. You can access
using this link https://www.ucas.com/ucas/teacher-training/getting-started/postgraduate-routes-teaching/teacher-training-schools
What is a QTS qualification?
Qualified teacher status (QTS or QTLS) is
required in England and Wales to work as a teacher of children in state schools
under local authority control, and in special education schools. A similar
status exists under a different name in Scotland and Northern Ireland. – Google definition
A QTS is another form of teaching qualification; this is so
you can work with children in state schools or under local authority control
and in special education.
What is a PGCE?
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a
one-year higher education course in England, Wales and Northern Ireland which
provides training in order to allow graduates to become teachers within
maintained schools. – Google definition
This qualification known as The postgraduate Certificate in
Education, this allows graduates to become teachers within maintained schools.
If interested in taking the PGCE course to get into teaching
there are a few thing you need to qualify with…
The only reason that I am not doing my PGCE this year is
because of not having my GCSE.
Where can I apply for the PGCE course
Looking at PGCE courses that are In the North East of
England
I am going to look at Carmel College – all though it says no
Vacancies, when I apply there will be next year.
